The durability of Obama's lead

Stability is the consistent name of the game this season.  Barack Obama has proven himself stable in the face of John McCain's erratic behavior, but Obama also has proven himself consistent in his lead of McCain.

The morning trackers are out.  Rasmussen shows a steady race:

Obama 50
McCain 45

Rasmussen observes:

The data continues to suggest a very stable race with Obama as the clear frontrunner. This is the eighteenth straight day that Obama's support has stayed in the narrow range from 50% to 52% while McCain has been at 44% of 45%

Research 2000/Daily Kos similarly shows a steady race:

Obama 52
McCain 40

DemFromCT notes:

Obama's percentage has been at or above 50 since 9/29.

Battleground/GWU similarly calls it a steady race with their numbers the same as they were at the last report:

Obama 51
McCain 43

Diageo Hotline has its numbers out:

Obama 48
McCain 42

Significantly, I think, the poll observes, "The IL Sen. leads 51-38% among LVs in CO, MI, NH, NM, NV, FL, OH, PA, VA and WI."

I think the "point here" and "point there" fluctuations we have seen in the polls over the last several weeks represent nothing but normal statistical variations in the data rather than any meaningful movement in people's sensibilities.  Analysts who look at polls typically and understandably like to focus on the margins between the candidates, and those data certainly are consequential, but I have seen almost no one commenting about the relentless consistency of Obama's lead.  Except for a short period after the Republican convention, Obama invariably has bested McCain in almost every single poll for the last four-and-a-half months.  I think that is the most important fact before us just three weeks before the presidential election.

As Shakespeare once surmised, "What is past is prologue."

Obama drops every weekend. This is no surprise. But a lot of folks enjoy hand wringing. I don't. Let's give Barack more cash to seal the deal.

Drudge is firing up the comeback meme (2.00 / 1)

Handwringing can create the illusion of real concern.

Gallup shows Obama up by 10 points today (2.00 / 1)

51-41.

I tell you, a point here and a point there is nothing but noise.  What is important here is not his margin; what is important is the consistency of his lead, and now, the consistency of his lead outside the margin of error.

That's it, baby; let's go win this election!

Re: Gallup shows Obama up by 10 points today (2.00 / 1)

Agreed. Gallup was a big deal today, though, amid the "rebooting" chatter. Rebooting has a better chance of working if it doesn't look like just a desperation ploy because the numbers aren't moving. If it looked like McCain was making progress anyway -- especially if it looked like the negative campaigning was working -- McCain could say, yes negative campaigning works but I'm too good for that.

But if nothing else is sticking, the "maybe they'll like me if I'm a nicer guy" ploy just looks desperate. And Gallup helps cement the "nothing else is working" view.

I remember Matt Drudge when he was a jerk trolling alt.society.generation-x in the 90s.  I've never respected him.

Good News (2.00 / 1)

We are on course to have the biggest Democratic win in an open seat election since forever. It will certainly be the best open seat election since the twentieth century began.

And ended (none / 0)

And there wasn't much in the way of democrats winning after Lincoln. So I think we can just say 'forever'.

I think I have landed on another planet????? (2.00 / 2)

It's almost Nov, and you guys are discussing is it NC or WV that a black man with a foriegn sounding name is going to carrry in a Presidential Election.

That's just so beyond the amazing!!!

As all this is going on, I think we all need to sit back and realize if ANYONE had run this scenario by us 2 years ago, we would have been handing them their ticket back to the loony bin.

The AA with the muslim name that sounds like an infamous terrorist wins:

NC
IN
MO
WV
ND
NE (1 EV)

Can we count on McCain to keep effing up? He hasn't let up yet, and if he keeps it up, it might just come to pass.

I know (none / 0)

It's kind of unbelievable. That's why people get the wobbles. Can politics really be this interesting and dynamic and transformative and cool. Something surely has to go wrong.

I agree McCain has screwed up royally. But he had little choice but flail. Obama and his campaign have played this perfectly so far. It's an amazing campaign in so many ways.

Wouldn't have missed the last ten months for the world

Re: I know (none / 0)

I want to be optimistic, really I do.
I know that there's really nothing McCain can do at this late stage to gain back what he's lost since this economic mess has started.
Let's just hope for a complete blowout so any dirty tricks the republicans pull (like purging 20% of the voters in Colorado) will be washed away in lots and lots of electoral votes.

word of caution (none / 0)

please don't get carried away by exuberance. 21 days is a life-time in politics, anything can happen between now and Nov 4th. Keep working, keep spreading the word, keep campaigning because we have to win and win we must.
